Film screening and lecture
10 March: Film screening and lecture by Jasmina Cibic at 6 pm
Jasmina Cibic is one from a new generation of Slovenian artists whose practice, although acutely conscious of a specific national political, cultural and artistic lineage, creates a very distinctive language of its own. Cibic’s recent projects and exhibitions include For Our Economy and Culture presented at the Slovenian Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennial. Not only are her two videos on view at the Capa Center on March 10, but the artist herself also reveals some secrets of her art through a lecture at 6pm on the same day. The program is in English.

A re-enactment of transcripts from a 1957 parliamentary debate discussing which artworks might be suitable to ‘decorate’ the newly built People’s Assembly of Slovenia. The non-resolved discussion speaks of the proposed artwork with the title Fruits of Our Land, which was to become the only censored artwork in the country.

Shot at Vila Bled where Yugoslavia’s president Tito entertained diplomats, royalty and dictators, the film presents an interview between the architect of the state residence and a western journalist. The theoretical debate based on state archives lies in opposite to the period-melodrama-type delivery that ironises the standardization of geo-political exoticisms.
