The total eclipse was a confusing, community-building event for those who stayed outdoors to see it on August 11, 1999, or watched the live broadcasts on television, as the full shadow of the moon was cast over the Earth. The peculiar lights, and the few minutes of daylight darkness were preserved in people’s memories and photo albums as ineffaceable memories. The compact cameras widely available in 1999 made it possible for even amateurs to take loads of private photographs of the event and its viewers. It is through these images and contemporary press photographs that the exhibition presents the spectacle of the celestial phenomenon, the people in their rectangular, Kraftwerk safety glasses, and how people in Hungary dressed in the late nineties; we also get a glimpse into the last grand moment of analog photography before the proliferation of digital cameras.
On the 20th anniversary of the total eclipse of August 11, 1999, the Institution of Contemporary Art – Dunaújváros (ICA-D) presents the exhibition Black Light in Dunaújváros, between July 20 and August 23, 2019, in cooperation with the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center. The organizers have announced a collection campaign for private photographs and private videos related to the Black Light. This installation showcases a selection of the images collected in the course of this campaign, as well as the press photographs unearthed for the exhibition.
