The Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center presents the photo series Komplement from Krystyna Bilak, winner of the Best Portfolio Award of the Budapest Portfolio Review 2019, at the Art Market Budapest.
Krystyna Bilak’s series modelling picture-puzzles tests our senses, and combinatory skills.
The manually created spectacles work like visual riddles, in which the human body plays the central role. The riddles can be solved with the help of position indicators like intertwining hands, arms and legs, half-visible faces and gazes, sequentially appearing poses, movements, and gestures. The illusionary images can be deciphered only by taking the time to observe them, extrapolating the tiny, (self-)revealing details and combinations.
Krystyna Bilak’s series titled Komplement questions the way photography images work. It raises questions of visual theory, reflecting both on the way the photographs are presented, and the ways they can be decoded, while inviting the viewers for an exploration, for a game startling their eyes and their minds. (Judit Gellér, curator)

Budapest Portfolio Review 2019
The Capa Center is committed to developing the possibilities of Hungarian photography and therefore considers it important that more and more Hungarian photographers take part in domestic and international programs. With this intent, the Budapest Portfolio Review event will be organized for the third time between April 12 and 13, 2019. The purpose of the professional event is to get participants to consult with renowned Hungarian and foreign experts about their images and to get feedback on their work. The consultants are recognized representatives of the Hungarian and international photography profession (creative artists, gallerists, art historians, head of institutions, agencies, festivals, organizations).
Art Market Budapest
Founded in 2011, Art Market Budapest is an international contemporary fine arts fair presenting a unique compilation of artists and exhibition spaces in one of Europe’s most special exhibition halls every year, Besides internationally renowned artists, the fair’s aim is to support the emerging stars of the future by providing international exposure to new galleries and young artists. Art Market Budapest has been rethinking social and geographical borders and created a new cultural region. The result of this process is the concept of young Europe which builds on fresh artistic inspirations coming from post-communist countries from the Baltic states to the Balkan, in the south from Turkey and Israel, in the east from Middle-Asian countries as much as from the new and progressive generation of artists from more developed Western countries. And what can be more engaging than a contemporary art fair that is global and local at the same time?
