The Portrait of Humanity 2020 exhibition showing the winning images of a worldwide collaborative contest born from a mission to prove there is more that unites us than sets us apart.

2020 has been a year of unprecedented global struggle. Perhaps now more than ever, we can find solace in what makes us human: the universal expressions of life that prove, after everything, we are made of the same things. Hope. Courage. Moments of reflection. Periods of resilience. First hellos. Last goodbyes. And everything in between.

Created by 1854 Media, publisher of British Journal of Photography, Portrait of Humanity 2020 was an open call to photographers to shine a light on what it means to be human in a tumultuous time in our history. Our panel of judges included photo editors, curators and festival directors from leading institutions around the world; between them, they selected 30 winning images and three winning series from a pool of thousands of entries in order to curate the exhibition before you.

Portrait of Humanity 2020 tells a vast breadth of stories from around the globe: from Eric Demers’ portrait of Greta Thunberg addressing the largest demonstration crowd in Canadian history to Marie Hald’s celebration of self-love and acceptance in her portrait of body-positive activist Marte; Mirja Maria Thiel’s moment of fervent intimacy between a married couple of 60 years, to Snezhana von Buedingen’s series following Sofie, a 19-year-old girl with Down’s Syndrome, as she transitions from girl to woman.

Above all, the winning work intimately captures the values that lie at the heart of the Portrait of Humanity movement: individuality, community and unity.

This exhibition is part of the Portrait of Humanity Global Tour 2020. Alongside the Capa Center, Portrait of Humanity 2020 will exhibit at the Indian Photo Festival, Hyderabad, on Clear Channel screens internationally, and in space with Sent Into Space.
