Zsófia Pályi received the Károly Hemző Prize last summer with her collection submitted for the contest. Traditionally, the prize comes with an exhibition opportunity provided by the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center, besides the certificate and the prize money, in the year following the announcement of the winners.
Zsófia Pályi was awarded the prize by the jury, as a mature and mellow photographer known for her high standard works in several fields of photography.
In her prize exhibition, she showcases one slice of her project titled Transit Country, a lyrical series presenting her unique take on an urgent socio-political phenomenon: migration.
Transit country – a name that could be attributed to our country, which has been mostly only a stop, rather than a destination, for the immigrants arriving from the Middle East and Africa. The fence raised along the southern border, and the resulting changes in the immigration routes, as well as the tightening of the immigration procedures implemented in Greece led to the present situation, when only the objects left behind bear witness to the migration of the faceless masses passing through not long ago.
The fate of the immigrants is shaped by chance in many ways, and it is not always clear what their desired destination is. Sometimes it only depends on the given human trafficking network where the bus takes them, where the airplanes land. And when someone enters the platform of truck in secret, he can only guess the destination from the license plate.
