In 2008 three leading musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic joined forces with clavichordist Steffan Gottfried, and founded the Brueghel Ensemble, which focuses on a characteristic genre of baroque chamber music, though they do not shrink from 20th-century or contemporary pieces either. All four artists are recognized experts on old music, who share a passion for improvisation and creative interpretation. One of them, René Staar is also active as a composer, and his piece for the solo violin is performed at this year’s CAFe Budapest.
The Budapest programme highlights the Brueghel Ensemble’s attraction to both old and new music. An airy baroque suite, virtuoso rococo chamber pieces and one Bach’s most complex compositions are counterpointed by the bird music of Olivier Messiaen and Peteris Vasks, as well as György Ligeti’s bold experiments.
