Workshop with the Best Wire Photographer of 2014

Bulent Kilic, the French News Agency AFP's senior photojournalist in Turkey – who was chosen to be the Best Wire Photographer of 2014 by the American TIME magazine and the British The Guardian newspaper, as well as awarded two prizes in this year's World Press Photo contest in the Spot News category – will hold a small private workshop in English primarily for professional photojournalists on 11 and 12 April at the Capa Center.

The program of the workshop:

The workshop will lay great emphasis on practice and will rely on the participants’ active contribution! By the end of the weekend, all participants are expected to complete a series of 10 photographs on their own.

Day 1 – Saturday 11 April 2015, 9am to 6pm

• Introduction of Bulent Kilic and the participants (a portfolio of up to 20 photograph from each participant)
• all participants will explain the subject they want to photograph during the two-day workshop in Budapest, which they will discuss and refine together with Bulent Kilic’s guidance
o everybody is requested to think about suggesting a feasible subject, which doesn’t require permits for example
o we will provide assistance to participants who are not familiar with Budapest, if they tell us in advance
• photographing on site according to the discussed instructions
o Bulent Kilic will be available all day, if somebody needs advice or a feedback
o the participants may return to the Capa Center any time during the day
• discussion of the photographs taken during the day, evaluation of the results
• at the end of the day at 6pm, there will be a public screening of the photographs taken in war zones last year by Turkish photojournalist Bulent Kilic, two of which were also awarded in the Spot News category of the World Press Photo contest. During the screening, foreign affairs expert Botond Feledy will talk with Mr. Kilic about the difficulties of reporting from armed conflict zones, the risks and the psychic burden photojournalists must take (in English, without an interpreter).

Day 2 – Sunday, 12 April 2015, 9am to 8pm

• consultation for those who did not have their turn on Saturday evening or they were still working on their subjects
• photographing again on site according to the consultations
o Bulent Kilic will be available all day, if somebody needs advice or a feedback
o the participants may return to the Capa Center any time during the day
• a joint selection of photographs, the elaboration of the pictures with Bulent Kilic’s guidance
• a joint screening finished with the evaluation of the workshop

Target group: professional photojournalists, cameramen and advanced amateurs.

The language of the workshop is English.

Participation fee: HUF 8000
to be paid by bank transfer to finalize the application.

Number of participants: up to 12 persons (the workshop may be cancelled and the participation fees fully refunded in case of less then 5 applicants).

Send your application to the workshop in e-mail to our e-mail address program@capacenter.hu, including your addresses and phone numbers (primarily your e-mail address and mobile phone number), as well as a portfolio containing up to 20 photographs (jpg or pdf files with up to 1500 pixels on the longer side), providing a general idea about your works that you wish to present. Applications will be accepted in the sequence of e-mails and the corresponding payments.

Application deadline: Friday, 3 April 2015, midnight

The participants of the workshop must use their own equipment for preparing their tasks. If you need any technical assistance, please, tell the Capa Center as soon as possible and we try to do our best to help you.
