THE 32nd HUNGARIAN PRESS PHOTO EXHIBITION

The greatest show of Hungarian photojournalism was opened on 27 March at a new site, the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center. As part of the Budapest Spring Festival, the 32nd Hungarian Press Photo Exhibition can be visited until 18 May at this visual institute under 8 Nagymező Street. The visitors are offered several special programs in connection to the exhibition in extended opening hours at the Capa Center.

This year almost 10 000 entries (22 percent more than last year) were submitted to the 32nd Hungarian Press Photo Contest for prizes totalling HUF 4 million. According to the practice in previous years, 13 category prizes and six special prizes were awarded by the jury of Hungarian and international professionals to talented Hungarian photojournalists. The 32nd Hungarian Press Photo Exhibition shows the best Hungarian press photos of 2013, featuring 387 pictures of 92 photographers at the Capa Center.

This year, the prize-winners of the 32nd Hungarian Press Photo Contest were typically in their 30s and 40s, so the pictures of the exhibition mostly reflect their way of seeing things. The main sponsor of this event, the TakarékPont Hálózat awarded the best photojournalist under 30 in line with this year’s trend.

“The most popular photo contest in Hungary has already made many good photographers well-known to the readers and media consumers. Their pictures may be displayed on these walls as they are only very rarely done in their papers and websites: “in a highlighted spot” – emphasized Bánkuti András, the president of the Photojournalist section of MÚOSZ, the Association of Hungarian Journalists.

The organisers, Túry Gergely and Pataky Zsolt were trying to select photographs which emotionally move the visitors besides showing the prize-winning pictures and series at the 32nd Hungarian Press Photo Exhibition. “The Hungarian Press Photo Exhibition always intends to be the imprint of a certain year. At the same time, it is important that it should not only be food for thought but also personal and entertaining. Looking at the pictures of the Sziget Festival from last year or the snowfall in March, we instinctively remember where we had been and what we had done at that time. It is a kind of collective time travel” – the organizers said.

Several programs are offered to the visitors in connection with the 32nd Hungarian Press Photo Exhibition in extended opening hours at the Capa Center. The first one will be a special discussion between a “photographer and his/her subject” at the Capa Center on 28 March, with world-famous Hungarian pianist and conductor Vásáry Tamás and his wife, dance artist, choreographer and director Tunyogi Henriett. Moreover, besides the exclusive guided tours, some of the pictures will even come to life at the exhibition: Mohai Balázs will balance on a thin rope at a Highline performance in the downtown and words will help to explore the photographs to the visitors at a special photo-slampoetry evening. Our family days offer an opportunity not only for children, but also their parents to take part in rich and exciting programs.
Besides the programs for the general public, there will also be high-standard events for professional photographers: they can participate at a Magnum Workshop organized for the first time in Hungary, at a photo market and instructional presentations among others.

The public will be continuously informed about the programs related to the Press Photo exhibition on our website www.capacenter.hu and on the facebook page of the Capa Center: www.fb.com/capakozpont
