According to the general definition, Art Brut works are created outside the official art world and institutional framework, most often without awareness of it. The term—meaning raw, rough, and unpolished art—was first used in 1945 by the artist Jean Dubuffet in a letter to a friend, after being deeply moved by works he encountered during visits to various Swiss psychiatric institutions. The concept quickly spread across Europe and soon after to the American continent. Dubuffet’s definition identified and categorized the elemental and unsettling art of psychiatric patients, prisoners, and individuals living on the margins of society—works highly valued for their dramatic expressive power, directness, and spontaneity.*

In comparison, the “photographic branch” of Art Brut only entered the focus of art historical interest much later, in the early 2000s. Since then, numerous highly successful exhibitions have been organized and major collections have emerged. The largest of these was created by French filmmaker and collector Bruno Decharme.

During this English-language guided tour, Bruno Decharme and Barbara Safarova will introduce the collection and share the origin stories of the exhibited works, along with other remarkable and lesser-known insights.
